The Best Time of the Year to Visit Laguna de Apoyo, Nicaragua

We often get asked this question: "When is the best time of the year to visit Villa Laguna and the Laguna de Apoyo?" And I have to say, I am biased because as someone who loves living here all year round, I actually appreciate the beauty, the goodness, the challenges, and the uniqueness of each season. But let me share with you what to expect if you are planning to visit us and experience this beautiful paradise known as the Laguna de Apoyo Natural Reserve, depending on the time of the year.

As you may already know, Nicaragua has two distinct seasons: the Dry Season from November to April, and the Rainy Season from May to October (though I personally prefer the term Green Season, which I find more accurate). In the images below, you can see an aerial picture taken in April 2016 to the left and in comparison, an aerial picture taken in November 2019 to the right.

It's important to note that the temperature remains relatively stable throughout the year, ranging between 20°C and 30°C (or 65°F to 85°F), and occasionally reaching around 33°C (92°F) during the hottest weeks in April and early May.

January, February & March

Traditionally, this is the "high" season for travel here, mainly because it is much colder in the northern countries, and people seek refuge in the warmth of the south, akin to migratory birds. During January and February, the landscape undergoes a transformation resembling Autumn in the northern hemisphere. It gradually turns brown as trees shed their leaves. While there might be occasional rainstorms, the weather is predominantly dry, and mosquitoes are practically nonexistent (although some years may see an increase in the number of flies, which remains a mystery!). The constant breeze during this period helps moderate the temperatures. Oh! And you might catch the first avocados of the season! 😋

April

Known as the hottest month here, April marks the end of the winds and brings the highest temperatures. The landscape becomes harsh, with predominantly dry and yellow terrain (except for the trees and plants we diligently water). Towards the end of the month, humidity increases in preparation for the eagerly anticipated rains in early May. On the bright side, April brings THE BEST sunrises and it marks the beginning of mango season. If you are a mango lover, you are coming at the right time! Additionally, if you happen to be escaping an unexpectedly cold spring in the northern countries, you will certainly appreciate the heat and sunshine as a delightful alternative 😊

May & June

Two of my favorite months to be here. Coincidentally, they are also considered the low season, marking the official beginning of the Green Season. However, I still can't fathom why, as these months are truly one of the best times to be around Laguna de Apoyo, in my opinion. The first week of May usually brings the first showers of the season, which feels like an early Christmas gift. Within a week, the land magically transforms into vibrant greenery (as you can see in the pictures below: the left one taken in April 2017, and the right one taken in May 2017). The water becomes calm and stunning, and the absence of crowds creates a feeling of having the whole Laguna to yourself. It is an incredibly beautiful time. It's also the season of fireflies and frogs. These creatures appear out of nowhere, illuminating our nights with visual and musical enchantment for the following weeks. Contrary to popular belief, the Green Season does not entail constant monsoon-style rain. It may rain in the morning, afternoon, or night, but then cease for the rest of the day. Sometimes, we may even go without rain for 3 or 4 days.

July, August & First Half of September

From mid-July to mid-August, Nicaragua experiences a weather phenomenon known as "canícula." It signifies a period of hotter temperatures and dry weather that occurs during the middle of the rainy season. Regular showers and a drop in temperature resume in the second half of August, lasting for about a month (those few weeks from mid-August to mid-September is another time of the year that I absolutely love!). And if you are into food pictures, dragon fruit (a.k.a pithaya) season begins now, giving you that pretty and incredible instagrammable color to play with… #protips

Second half of September & October

I must admit, these are my least favorite weeks to be around here. Traditionally, the rains become more frequent in the second half of September and continue until mid to late October, creating a humid and wet environment and way more chances to experience heavier storms. Nonetheless, this is not an issue for many people, and if you are one of them, you will be rewarded with the most raw and breathtaking landscape. The Laguna thrives and reaches its peak with regards to lushness during this time, with fewer visitors around. Towards the end of October, the rains start to subside, giving way to another one of my favorite times of the year… ⬇️

November & December

Again, in my opinion, these are two of the best months to visit Laguna de Apoyo. Although technically part of the dry season, November usually experiences sporadic showers, sunny days, and a beautiful green and lush landscape within the Laguna de Apoyo Natural Reserve. The water becomes calm and clear, and the temperature is nearly perfect (warm, but you may need a light cover at night). December is similar, but the first week usually brings the onset of the Windy Season, which lasts a few weeks until the end of March. Some people welcome the constant breeze and waves, but personally, I prefer the calmer waters the previous month. As they say, "Different strokes for different folks."

I hope these insights into the different seasons and months help you decide the best time for your visit to Laguna de Apoyo. Regardless of the season, I'm confident you'll fall in love with this beautiful paradise, just as I have over the years. We look forward to having you!

With gratitude,

Miriam x
