August 2023

Fundación Rescatando Huellas is a really lovely animal shelter with almost 150 cats and dogs, that we have known and supported for a while (one of our rescue dogs, Nina, came from them).

They also organize vet campaigns in their community (the shelter is located in a very humble area) to support low income families with the care of their animals.

On this occasion, we responded to three of their calls for help within the last few weeks with the following cases (pictures to the left or below in order):

  1. Polly is a sweet doggie who was stabbed with a machete 😭 Her owner couldn’t afford the cost of the surgery to save her, so they asked for support from the community (WARNING: very graphic video). We sponsored half of this surgery and we couldn’t be happier to see how well Polly recovered on this post in which they specifically thanked us for the support 💓

  2. This little fella (OMG, those eyes and ears!) turned up with his human family to the community vet day and he got some basic care, but as he was not neutered, they asked if someone would sponsor his surgery, which we did in full.

  3. Sahari is an 11 year old girl who recently adopted Pelusa, this little fluffy lady who had been abandoned after being used for breeding and no longer being able to carry puppies. Pelusa was coming to the vet day to be spayed, however she was presenting a prolapsed uterus as a consequence of her past breeding life and there was a need for additional funds to be able to carry out her special surgery. They put out a call on two posts, here and here (WARNING: one of the videos is graphic). We sponsored the case in full and they were so kind to dedicate a post to Aixa once Pelusa was out of surgery.

We sponsored 3 cases from animal sanctuary “Fundación Rescatando Huellas”

We sponsored 2 cases from “Proyecto Omega”, organization focused on spay/neuter of strays, and support for the pets of low income families.

The volunteer team at “Proyecto Omega” works tirelessly attending stray animals cases mostly around Managua. They are on a mission to castrate as many street cats and dogs as possible using TNR technique (trap, neuter, release) to reduce the number of abandoned animals in the streets of the capital.  They also answer calls for support from low income families that love their animals but don’t have the financial means to care for them at times.

On this occasion, we were happy to help with these two cases:

  1. This lady lives in a one room tin house and somehow, she has rescued 27 cats, whom are very well looked after by her alone. The team visited her home, 26 of the kitties were already spayed/neutered, and the last one has now be taken care of as well, thanks to them. They told us how remarkable it is for someone to do such a great job with very limited resources, so we gifted this lovely lady with 2 bags of cat food as a thank you for her efforts to keep so many creatures safe. If only every human in this planet had a heart like hers!

  2. The second pic is actually another family who has also rescued all these kitties from the streets. They contacted Proyecto Omega because one of the cats was sick and the team is taking care of him . Apparently all the females had already been spayed, but the 5 males were still in need of neutering, so we sponsored all their surgeries (you can see the first three here, relaxing after their surgery). Welcome to the nut-free life!

Controlling street animal population is one of the best tools to reduce animal suffering in developing countries and we couldn’t be prouder of “Proyecto Omega” for identifying really special cases and for all the work they do. And very grateful for the beautiful words remembering Aixa on her 3rd birthday on this post.
