March 2022

We volunteered at Mirador de Galán, Nicaragua’s only horse rescue center.

El Mirador de Galán is one of those lovely organizations run by even lovelier people.

They are a group of volunteers who rescue and rehabilitate abandoned horses, mostly discarded cart horses, providing them with a safe space to run free for the rest of their lives. In a country where, unfortunately, there is still widespread misinformation about animal welfare, they also focus on educating school children who visit the refuge, and raise general awareness about the suffering of horses used for work or entertainment.

We have collaborated financially with them whenever we have been able to in the last few years, but this time, as Maribel was spending more time in the country, she also committed to come over every week and support the daily tasks needed in the refuge to keep the almost 20 horses (and an old donkey!) in the best possible conditions.

The refuge is located not far from Villa Laguna, about 30 mins drive, and if you are staying with us, we might be able to arrange a visit so you can meet the horses and learn more about them.

If you would like to contribute directly to El Mirador de Galán, and even become a sponsor of one of the horses, you can send your donation safely via paypal here.

Would you like to be part of something real?

Join one of our retreats or group experiences (all include a donation!) or if you prefer, make your donation of any amount you wish to the “Memorias de Aixa” Fund, and help us to continue supporting causes that we personally seek to help people and animals who really need us. All funds go directly to where they are needed and we always keep you up to date on everything.
